With a Mediterranean influence, the Illyria lamp is rich in detail. The central "bead" is laminated in 8 sections of curly maple, separated by walnut inlay. Bigleaf maple burl and walnut medallions are set on each section before turning. The neck and base are similarly sectioned in walnut. The neck section is rough turned to profile, then hand faceted to create a sweeping octagonal shape and to mirror the octagonal plinth. The plinth ring is laid up with the wood's end grain to the outside to add variety in the wood figure. The conical shade is recommended with this lamp. Panels can either be light (alkyd) or amber (shellac) mica. Also available are birdseye veneer panels. Wood veneers are infused with clear penetrating epoxy and laminated to sheer fiberglass cloth to stabilize and inhibit cracking. Lamps and shades are fine sanded, oiled to bring out the figure, and finished in catalysed lacquer for a durable finish.
