The Bernhardt House in Salisbury, North Carolina had been vacant and allowed to deteriorate for many years when it was purchased by the Historic Salisbury Foundation to be restored and adapted. A severe roof leak had rotted the main staircase so that it had largely collapsed.
We were hired to reconstruct the stairway, reusing as much of the original work as possible. We had to replace almost half of the pieces that were either too badly rotted or damaged. The lighter wood in the photo is the new replacement work.
The building was eventually converted into commercial space.
